This article is scheduled for a Rework.

A psychical investigation agent, or simply agent, is a person with Talent and hired for the ghost-hunting business ever since the Problem occurred. They are known for their youth, manners, and rapiers; the stronger the connection with the restless dead the higher up an agent is, the especially gifted ones mostly choose to work for famed agency like Rotwell or Fittes Agency.

Agents were normally accompanied by adult supervisors who oversaw teams and ensured they functioned as intended. These supervisors were usually older and had either lost their Talent or were on the verge of doing so.

Agents underwent training with the rapier, receiving certificates from Grades 1-4 based on their level of ability.

In general, agents were taught to despise relic-men, them being the antithesis of everything that agents stood for. On the other hand, those with insufficient Talent often joined the low-paying and dangerous Night Watch. Sensitives were those who possessed Talent but refused to work as agents for reasons of pacifism. Agents generally held them in low regard.

Trivia[]

  • An "operative" is another way to refer a psychical investigation agent.
  • In Netflix's Lockwood & Co. television series, it is stated that it was illegal for Anthony Lockwood to have hired Lucy Carlyle to the Lockwood & Co. agency without her having first received her Grade 4 certificate. In the original novels, it is indicated that it is unusual for him to have done this, but not necessarily illegal.

Behind the scenes[]

  • In the US editions, "psychical investigation agent" is instead written as "psychic investigation agent."
