The Fairfax Iron Company, also simply known as Fairfax Iron, was a company previously owned by John Fairfax and his father before him. It later changed ownership due to the death of John Fairfax, passing into control of a niece and nephew of his.
Fairfax one was one of several major companies that dealt in merchandise related to dealing with the Problem and providing defences against ghosts, two of the other most major ones being United Salts and the Sunrise Corporation.
History[]
Even prior to the Problem, Fairfax Iron was one of the leading manufacturers of iron products. The Problem proved a huge boon to the company, as iron was quickly discovered to be one of the three most major defences against ghosts, in-between silver and salt.
Upon the advent of the problem, Fairfax Iron immediately began supplying seals, filings and chains to the Fittes and Rotwell agencies, the two most major ghost-hunting agencies of London and the United Kingdom as a whole. They also provided the iron which went into the protective ghost-lamps that were erected to provide nighttime protection against ghosts.
These products alone were more than enough to ensure the company's fortune. They, however, also produced a number of consumer products which increased their wealth even further, including iron gnomes dotting people's houses, iron necklaces, and bracelets adorning the arms of babies leaving hospitals.[1]
After the death of John Fairfax, Angeline Crawford, a niece of his, became the new head of the company. She was one of many individuals who attended a black-tie party celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Fittes Agency. Anthony Lockwood stated that it was probably best that he and his fellow agents of Lockwood & Co. probably not make small-talk with her due to them having killed her uncle. When Carlyle pointed out that she didn't actually know this, Lockwood said that there was still such a thing as good form.[2]
