Fittes Agency is the most respected and eldest paranormal agency in Britain, founded by Marissa Fittes exactly 50 years before The Whispering Skull[3]. Penelope Fittes, her granddaughter, is the current Chairwoman.

The agency's symbol is a silver unicorn carrying a lantern which is a reference to the lantern Marissa Fittes used against the Mud Lane Phantom. Also with her that moment was Tom Rotwell who used his homemade sword to defeat the phantom. The sword Tom used also became Rotwell Agency's symbol.

The Fittes Agency was said to value courtesy, secrecy and discretion. As such, Anthony Lockwood considered a mark of George Cubbin's raw talent as both an agent and top-notch researcher that he lasted six months there.[4]

History[]

The agency was founded by Marissa Fittes, one of the two scientists who originally discovered the Problem (the other one being Tom Rotwell). Hambleton Agency was merged with Fittes Agency at one point.[5]

By the time of the first book Fittes has become one of the largest, most famous and most powerful agencies in the UK. In fact, is it alleged by Quill Kipps, a Fittes employee, that it is really Fittes and Rotwell who call the shots in the fight against the Problem, not DEPRAC, the government agency tasked with coordinating and supervising the agencies.[6]

Located on the Strand, Fittes House is the headquarters of the Fittes Agency. It is where many of the operations are carried out when not out in the field, including secretive research on Sources and the Problem. Penelope Fittes had her apartment above Fittes House and was said to rarely leave it, controlling the business with an iron fist. The main floor of the building contained within the Hall of the Fallen Heroes, featuring oil paintings of young agents that had fallen in the line of duty and plinths beneath decked with rapiers and wreaths of flowers. Within this was a set of six elevators, five colored bronze and one silver, leading to other floors of the building. The silver elevator led directly Penelope Fittes's apartment. Within the Fittes House was also the Black Library, an octagonal room filled with books containing information on the Problem, many of them obscure and rare. The Fittes House was the site of a black-tie party celebrating the agency's 50th anniversary.
