Manifestation is the summary term for the attributes of the appearance, effects, and actions of a ghost. This includes the physical attributes of the Visitor itself, visual occurrences, and the effects a ghost has on the living.

Definition[]

Physical Attributes[]

All ghosts except Poltergeists appear visually in some form or fashion, for those with good enough Sight to see them. They may appear as they were before their death, or they may reflect the current state of their corpse. Changers are able to manipulate their appearance, such as in The Screaming Staircase where the ghost at Combe Carey Hall manifested as blood in the Red Room and monks on the Staircase itself. Some ghosts are barely visible even to those with good Sight, which makes them all the more dangerous.

Visual Occurrences[]

Along with their physical form, a ghost often has visual effects that accompany their manifestation. Some of these are ectoplasmic and would ghost-touch any agent who came in contact with them, while others are harmless. Examples of this are ghost-fog and other-light, which are both common occurrences with varying levels of danger associated with them. Ghost-fog is largely diffuse and therefore not dangerous, but in rare cases it condenses and should be avoided.

Effects of a Ghost[]

Depending on the strength and type of the Visitor, it has certain abilities or effects on the living. The most dangerous of these abilities is ghost-touch, which kills almost on contact but can be treated in small cases. Almost ghosts that manifest physical forms are capable of killing through ghost-touch, the exception being extremely weak Type Ones such as Glimmers. Additionally, ghosts involuntarily generate effects that mess with the emotions of the living, dulling them or blowing them out of proportion.

Trivia[]

  • Agents frequently chew gum or eat chocolate to combat miasma.
  • Agents with strong Sight occasionally have to wear sunglasses to shield their eyes from bright death-glows.
