Plot Summary[]

The Apple Tree depicts an energetic, five-year-old Anthony Lockwood and his relationship with his older sister, Jessica Lockwood, with mentions of the relationship with his parents, Celia and Donald Lockwood. It outlines Anthony Lockwood's wish to see a ghost and Jessica attempting to get him to read the Fittes Manual for Ghost-hunters with her (which he adamantly refuses to do). The story concludes with Anthony distraught and confused at seeing the ghosts of his parents on a summer evening under the apple tree in the garden of 35 Portland Row. He is reprimanded by their nanny, only to be told the next day of their deaths. The nanny quits, leaving Jessica alone to comfort Anthony.
